When Donor Communications Go Sour ... Turning Lemons into Lemonade

lemonsCommunication is the key to successful fundraising, but what happens when you must communicate difficult news to your donor(s) or constituents?  Our panel of professionals will share their stories of success and failures in those “hard-to-have” conversations and communications.

Attendees will learn about:

  • Sharing bad news with a donor
  • What to do when you have to tell a donor “No”
  • The importance of having a crisis communications plan
  • How to rebuild donor relationships

 

About the Presenters

Carl Bako, Development Director, Catholic Charities Diocese of Cleveland

Carl BakoCarl has been with Catholic Charities for seven years. In his work as Development Director, he is responsible for fundraising campaigns, event management, grantwriting, marketing of events, and building relationships.

 

Daniel Blain, Vice President for Advancement and President of NEOMED Foundation, Northeast Ohio Medical University

Daniel BlainDaniel is responsible for maximizing the University’s fundraising results and overseeing the Division of Advancement, including development and alumni relations. He led the University’s 40th anniversary year-long celebration and Shine On, NEOMED’s $40 million comprehensive university-wide fundraising campaign, which concluded in September 2018, having raised over $44 million from 2,800 donors.

 

Dawn Moeglin, Principal, Full-Circle Fundraising

Dawn MoeglinDawn Moeglin, Principal for Full-Circle Fundraising LLC, has nearly 25 years of experience in fund development, nonprofit strategic planning, and marketing. Starting her career by prospecting, researching, writing, and managing grants for nonprofits, schools, and government agencies, she has successfully obtained millions of dollars from federal, state, and local funders. Before founding Full-Circle Fundraising LLC earlier this year, she implemented the rebranding of Akron-based VANTAGE Aging, including the design of a new website and the integration of communications during a major merger.

 

Shirley Smith, CFREShirley Smith, CFRE, Regional Director of Development, Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio

As Director of Development for Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio, Shirley manages a portfolio of committed donors in Akron, Toledo, Youngstown, Canton and Cleveland. She is responsible for meeting a six-figure annual goal raised through corporate campaigns. Passionate about cause- and mission-driven fundraising, she began her nonprofit fundraising career at United Way of Greater Dayton. Shirley is in the current Leadership Akron Signature Class 37; president of the ATHENA Akron, Inc. board of directors; and on the board of Curated Storefronts.
