BE the CAUSE

BE the CAUSE Campaign

Through your support of the BE the CAUSE Campaign, you help determine the future growth and development of the fundraising profession.

AFPNEO manages the BE the CAUSE campaign at the local Chapter level, which allows us to keep more dollars raised from the campaign right here in northeast Ohio, supporting chapter membership and conference scholarships that directly benefit our members.

Remaining dollars will support AFP International's strategic initiatives such as the Ralph E. Chamberlain scholarship; innovative programs on diversity, youth in philanthropy, and ethics; Fundraising Fundamentals curriculum; and philanthropic research. All of these programs have a positive impact on our local chapter.

You can make your gift to the Campaign today by (1) emailing your pledge to info@afpneo.org (you can pledge now and pay by December 15th); (2) making your gift online at www.afpneo.org/pay.htm; or (3) mailing your check with the pledge form to PO Box 1286, Bath OH 44210.

NPD Awardee Profile
Vincent & Nancy DiGirolamo
Lifetime Achievement Award

AFPNEO is pleased to present Vincent & Nancy DiGirolamo the AFPNEO Lifetime Achievement Award for 2018. They were nominated by AFPNEO member Jessica Hudson of Summa Health Foundation.

Vincent & Nancy DiGirolamo

In 2007, AFP recognized Vincent DiGirolamo with the Outstanding Philanthropist Award. Since that time, Vincent and his wife, Nancy, have continued to demonstrate their enduring commitment to building a stronger community through their dedicated service, unwavering generosity and inspirational example.

Nancy was diagnosed with blood cancer in 2006 and with lymphoma in 2010. In gratitude for the care Nancy received at Summa Health throughout her cancer journey, the DiGirolamos established the Summa Health Cancer Institute’s Vincent and Nancy DiGirolamo Endowed Chair in Oncology in 2007.  In 2014, they made an additional commitment to support the chair, bringing their total endowment to $3 million. They were the first to endow a chair at Summa  Health.

Vincent & Nancy DiGirolamo

The DiGirolamo Chair helped draw current Cancer Institute chair Gilbert Padula, MD, a nationally recognized trailblazer in oncology, to Summa Health in 2017. With the protected and lasting support provided by the endowed chair, Dr. Padula has the unique opportunity to accelerate innovative cancer treatment, prevention and patient support services that otherwise would not be possible for our community.

The DiGirolamos were awarded the 2015 Boniface DeRoo Award for Philanthropy, the highest philanthropic honor presented by Summa Health. Malone, MD, former Summa Health president and chief executive officer; and Thomas A. Clark, chair, Summa Foundation Board of Directors.

In addition, the DiGirolamos’ endowment funds the annual Vincent and Nancy DiGirolamo Oncology Symposium, which has provided more than 1,500 physicians, nurses and other health professionals from northeast Ohio and beyond with an opportunity to expand their knowledge and skills in cancer care. Vincent and Nancy have supported a broad range of clinical areas across the health system, including critical care, neuroscience and medical education.

Vincent & Nancy DiGirolamo

Vincent and Nancy also dedicate their time to Summa Health as volunteer leaders. Vincent served on the Board of directors for both Summa Health System and Summa Health Foundation, while Nancy is a longtime member of the Women’s Board of Summa Health System. Both Vincent and Nancy share their experiences and expertise as members of the Summa Health Cancer Institute Leadership Council, working in partnership with other influential community leaders and the health system’s senior leaders to secure the future of high-quality, compassionate cancer care for the Greater Akron community.

Numerous local and regional nonprofits have benefited from the boundless charity of the DiGirolamos, including the University of Akron, Hiram College, Akron Community Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, Boy Scouts of America, Stan Hywet Hall and Gardens, Walsh Jesuit High School, Ohio Ballet, Akron Symphony, Child Guidance and Family Solutions, Catholic Charities, Catholic Community Foundation, Catholic Diocese of Cleveland, American Cancer Society of Ohio, and The Gathering Place.
