dangerWe are aware of the ways in which we can most effectively serve diverse clients, but we are not always aware of the ways in which our unconscious biases can interfere. This program explores the “Single Story” bias and how it can negatively impact our interactions with others, especially when the bias is operating outside of our awareness.

Single stories are single accounts or stereotypes that we hold about others, based on the social group we assume that they belong to. This workshop will explore this concept through interactive activities and discussions.

Amanda Cooper PhDDr. Amanda Cooper is the Director of SHIFT Consulting at The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio.  She specializes in the design and implementation of culture, change, and inclusion focused initiatives. At The Diversity Center, she leads a team of passionate leaders in the field of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Together, they support the development of productive, respectful, and inclusive organizational cultures.

The Grant Professionals Association in Ohio presents a one-day regional conference to provide professional development and networking for grant and nonprofit professionals in Ohio and neighboring states. The Whole Nine Yards: From Prospecting to Reporting, will be held on September 21, 2018, from 9am to 4pm at the Quest Conference Center in Columbus, Ohio.

The keynote speaker is Gene Tempel, EdD, Professor of Philanthropic Studies and Founding Dean Emeritus, Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy and the President Emeritus, Indiana University Foundation. Nine additional breakout sessions will offer a variety of topics in grants, fundraising and non-profit management .

The AFP CFRE Refresher Course asks participants to apply fundraising theory, skills, and techniques within the six knowledge domains of the field, based on three or more years of professional experience in fundraising. This one-day course is a combination of a high-level review, self-exploration of knowledge, and peer exchange of best practices – all of which are facilitated two of Toledo's most knowledgeable fundraising practitioners: Ken Frisch, ACFRE - Vice President, Philanthropic Services & Advancement, Toledo Community Foundation (retired) & Vern Snyder, CFRE, ACFRE - Vice President for Institutional Advancement, The University of Toledo Foundation (retired).

Members: $390; Non-Members: $490 Registration fee includes course manual and lunch.

Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award

AFPNEO is pleased to present Kim Haws Falasco the AFPNEO Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser Award for 2018. She was nominated by AFPNEO member Colette Taylor of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve

Kim Haws Falasco’s driving force is creating a caring community for Greater Akron. She is a community activist who dedicates her time and energy to make Akron a better place to live. Kim’s passion is evident through her interests in women’s issues and youth and community improvement activities.

Kim is a frequent volunteer with the BGCWR

Kim is a graduate of Leadership Akron Class 20. Through her experience in Leadership Akron, she discovered the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Western Reserve (BGCWR) and for 15 years, she has dedicated herself to the organization’s cause.  As immediate past board chair, she provides guidance to the current chair and continues to encourage active participation from board members. Kim is involved on the community engagement committee, providing advice on marketing and development activities for the organization.

Not only does Kim devote her time and provide financial support, she shares the successes of BGCWR to raise awareness and inspire others to join the effort. She also personally invests in the administrative staff at BGCWR, supporting their attendance at professional development activities and key networking events, providing them with the opportunity to learn more ways to advance the organization’s mission.

Kim is active with other local organizations. Since 1997, she has been involved with Keep Akron Beautiful and currently serves as co-chair of fundraising and Vice Chair of the Board. Kim served on the board of the Women's Endowment Fund of the Akron Community Foundation for nine years continues to be a champion of the cause, supporting events and contributing financially. She serves on the board of Summit County Court-Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), and is involved with Girls on the Run and United Way of Summit County. Kim served on the American Heart Association’s 2016 campaign executive committee and has chaired their Go Red for Women campaign.

Kim is a past president of Baird Women Advisors and the Women’s Network of Northeast Ohio and a member of Ellevate, a professional women’s network. She was named a 2015 “Woman of Professional Excellence” by the Women’s Network and is a past president and 2009 Athena award finalist.

BE the CAUSE Campaign

Through your support of the BE the CAUSE Campaign, you help determine the future growth and development of the fundraising profession.

AFPNEO manages the BE the CAUSE campaign at the local Chapter level, which allows us to keep more dollars raised from the campaign right here in northeast Ohio, supporting chapter membership and conference scholarships that directly benefit our members.

Remaining dollars will support AFP International's strategic initiatives such as the Ralph E. Chamberlain scholarship; innovative programs on diversity, youth in philanthropy, and ethics; Fundraising Fundamentals curriculum; and philanthropic research. All of these programs have a positive impact on our local chapter.
