Financial Literacy Grant

Deadline: October 19

Apple Growth Partners Community Outreach Charitable Giving Fund of Akron Community Foundation is now accepting grant proposals for financial literacy education.

As Accountants + Business Advisors, the AGP Fund hopes to strengthen non-profits in our community by supporting financial literacy education programming both financially and through volunteerism. The AGP Fund welcomes applications from any 501(C)(3) organization in Northeast Ohio for financial literacy education programming.

Applications must be submitted electronically to using the grant application form located at Grant applications will be accepted through October 19, 2017 and all grants will be disbursed by December 31, 2017. Grants will average between $1,000 and $2,500.

Proposal Writing Boot Camp

This three-day, project-based immersion course focuses on the essential knowledge and skills fundraisers need to develop effective foundation grant proposals. Participants will become familiar with the key components of a competitive grant proposal to a foundation, best practices for developing a well-organized budget, and a targeted list of foundation funding prospects. Participants will be encouraged to approach their proposal from the funder's perspective and to think critically about what makes a compelling pitch.

Day 1: Participants develop the need statement, and gain peer feedback on their writing, then launch into an overview on using a logic model framework to craft the project description and program evaluation. An introduction and review of the letter of inquiry follows. 

Day 2: Participants continue to gain familiarity and practice with components of a full proposal and letter of inquiry and draft and submit a one-page letter of inquiry for day three’s peer-review exercise. We continue to cover proposal packaging and online applications. In the afternoon, participants consider the mission-money matrix framework to prioritize fundraising in their organization, then learn to develop a project budget in the afternoon. 

Day 3: Participants kick off the day learning how to research, approach and cultivate relationships with funders. In the afternoon, participants will engage in a live expert and peer-review of their submitted letter of inquiry. We wrap-up the three days together with closing exercise and evaluation. 

To accommodate diversity in learning styles, the three days is grounded in project-based learning and includes a variety of individual writing time, small group discussions and activities, peer review, and large group lecture. This course qualifies for 18 CFRE credits.

AFP Call for Action
New Tax Reform Plan Could Reduce Giving by Billions

AFP is calling on U.S. members to provide comments online about the new GOP Tax Reform Framework that could reduce by giving by $13 billion every year.

FlagThe GOP Tax Reform Framework, developed by the White House and key Republican Members of Congress, calls for the standard deduction to be doubled. That change would cut the number of taxpayers who itemize from 33 percent to just 5 percent—a loss of 30 million itemizers!

Why is this critical? Because itemizers account for 82 percent of all giving in the U.S.

Research by Independent Sector and the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy estimates that doubling the standard deduction would reduce giving by $13 billion annually. That figure represents a significant decrease—more than 6 percent of all individual giving—that would dramatically affect charitable program and services across the country.

AFP’s Response

To address this issue, AFP is calling for Congress to include the universal charitable deduction in the tax reform plan. A universal charitable deduction would allow all taxpayers, regardless of whether they itemize or not, to take a charitable deduction.

The same research above shows that adding a universal charitable deduction to the increased standards deduction results in overall giving increasing by $5 billion! The powerful effect of the universal charitable deduction is enough to overcome any loss in giving when the standard deduction is doubled.

What You Can Do

Go to the GOP Tax Reform Survey website and provide comments about a) what a loss in charitable giving would mean for your organization and b) the importance of adding the universal charitable deduction.
